About the Role:

The Air Force Test Center is looking for a Full-Time Computer Scientist to work at the 412th Test Wing, 412th Electronic Warfare Group, 445th Test Squadron (445 TS/EWJN) at Edwards Air Force Base.

The primary purpose is to apply technical work and professional engineering to modeling and simulation systems that support developmental and operational test and evaluation (DT & E and OT & E) test programs. These systems consist of computer networks, system integration laboratories (SIL), and/or hardware-in-the-loop (HITL) facilities integrating digital and analog processors, cockpit displays and controls, mechanical and electrical interfaces, and operational flight program software. The software includes algorithms for navigation, ordnance targeting/delivery, flight controls, energy & propulsion management, communications, sensor imaging, and target locations and identification.

Typical 2026 salary range: $104,349 - $161,313 Per Year (includes Locality)

Travel Requirements: Subject to Temporary Duty Assignment (TDY) by military or commercial aircraft approximately 60 days per year.

Major Duties:

- The primary duties required are those necessary to provide modeling and simulation expertise applied to the development, upgrade, operation, and integration of constructive, non-real-time and virtual, piloted real-time simulators applied to the Flying Quality, Airframe, Propulsion, Avionic, Sensor, Weapon and Electronic Warfare (EW) mission areas.

- Serves as 412 EWG project engineer for development of aircraft flight simulators. Prepare simulation development plans which specify computer equipment requirements for digital and analog hardware integration, cockpit interface hardware, and software design approach. Uses computer software development fundamentals to design interface systems for interconnecting computers, peripherals, models and simulator cockpit subsystems.Determine simulation hardware requirements and documents the estimated schedules, cost, and resource expenditures for implementation.

- Conduct and report on simulator tests in the area of dynamic and static stability, performance, and flight control systems. Establish checkout procedures to verify proper simulator operation.

- Troubleshoot and debug the computer programs to ensure design goals are met. Program and operate digital and special purpose computers to simulate aircraft flight and on-board subsystem, taking into consideration the accuracy requirements, necessity for real-time operation, and computer capacity.

- Prepare technical documentation of simulator development and operation which describe, in detail, mechanization techniques, new or unique software algorithms, operations procedures, configuration control; present test results; draw conclusions and make recommendations.

- Prepare and present project briefings to inform project and management personnel on simulator status, design data, and test results. Attend project meetings and conferences to represent the Test and Evaluation Modeling and Simulation Flight and expresses opinions directly to Command personnel and contractors.

- Perform technical and engineering work using classified information in various media and formats. Apply technical and safety review processes to minimize any hazards and to ensure technical adequacy. Work involves tasking of military personnel, contractors, and civilians; in the conduct of these activities, thoroughly understands and properly implements AFTC, AFMC, USAF, and DOD regulations.

- Maintains currency of knowledge and properly implements acquisition processes, policies and regulations as applicable to Test and Evaluation (T&E).

- Develop, prioritize and report on organization performance goals and objectives. Develop operating procedures, test plans, and test reports within required suspense dates established by management. An effective reporting system is implemented such that there is adequate resolution of system related deficiencies. Keep customer and the supervisor apprised of status.

- Project results, conclusions, and recommendations are transmitted to high level officials, including briefings to General Officers, Senior Executive Service civilians, and other high level government officials.

 Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance.
  • This is a drug testing designated position.
  • Ability to program (various languages and protocols), integrate/manipulate models and generate computer networks for virtual, live, and constructive simulation of combat aircraft avionics, armament, or electronic warfare systems.
  • Knowledge of concepts, principles, and techniques across multiple interrelated and integrated technical and test engineering disciplines (combat aircraft avionics, armament, or electronic warfare systems or related systems/subsystems).
  • Knowledge of flight and laboratory air vehicle/missile test conduct, coordination and supervision, data analysis/evaluation and applicable flight test truth sources, modeling and simulation systems and techniques, technical report preparation, and administrative aspects of flight test programs.
  • Ability to plan and organize work, coordinate between various electronic/aerospace/mechanical engineering and test disciplines, and coordinate with other Air Force, DOD, and other domestic and foreign government agencies.
