About the Role:

The Air Force Test Center is looking for a Full-Time/Firefighter (Hazardous Materials Technician/Basic Life Support (GS-0081-07) to work at 412th Test Wing, Air Force Plant 42 (AFMC/412 TW/OL-AFP 42) at Air Force Plant 42 Fire Department (CEFO) in Palmdale, CA.

The primary purpose of this position is: To serve as a Firefighter assigned to a crew engaged in airfield, structural firefighting, crash-rescue, Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) Technician, to drive and operate firefighting vehicles of significant complexity, to respond to the presence or potential releases of hazardous materials for the purpose of stopping or controlling the release, and to conduct performance of noninvasive emergency medical procedures to provide Basic Life Support (BLS), at Air Force Plant 42, a Government Owned-Contractor Operated (GOCO) industrial plant comprised of 5,644 acres, 3.4 million square feet of building space, 8 separate/distinct aerospace production sites, and a major airfield with two-12,000 foot runways and associated taxiways used to support high performance aircraft. The organizational location of this position is: 412th Test Wing, Operating Location Air Force Plant 42, Palmdale, CA, 93550.

Typical 2026 salary range: $58,827 to $76,476 per year (includes Locality)

Travel Requirements: 25%

Areas of Consideration (AOC): Department – wide (DoD)

Desired Skills:

• Proven ability to provide Basic Life Support (BLS), including performing patient assessments, administering CPR, controlling bleeding, and documenting patient care.

• Skilled in strategically positioning vehicles and operating specialized equipment such as pumps, foam generators, and nozzles under emergency conditions.

•  Experience performing standby duties during hazardous flight-line operations such as hot pit refueling, engine maintenance, and ammunition handling.

Major Duties:

• Must be able to perform Basic Life Support (BLS), including CPR and AED procedures.

• Must be capable of driving and operating complex firefighting vehicles, including pumpers, Airport Rescue Fire Fighting (ARFF) apparatus.

• Must be able to wear and utilize HAZMAT personal protective equipment, including Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA).

• Firefighter I/II,Driver/Operator ARFF, Driver/Operator Pumper Certifications 

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Depending on the type of position (competitive/excepted) you are selected for, you will be required to serve a 1-year probationary period OR 2-year trial period
  • Upon completion of your probationary/trial period, your employment will be terminated unless you receive certification, in writing, that your continued employment advances the public interest
  • Knowledge to drive and operate firefighting vehicles of significant complexity, and the principles of hydraulics as they pertain to waterflow, water pressure, water levels, line (friction) losses, etc.
  • Knowledge of basic and specialized airfield and structural firefighting equipment (fire alarm system operation, fire extinguishing equipment operation, etc.), techniques, and procedures; and of basic and specialized building design, construction, and occupancy.
  • Knowledge of hazardous materials emergency response procedures, equipment, identification, and mitigation actions.
