About the Role:

The Air Force Test Center is looking for two Temporary Hires to work at the AFTC History Office, Edwards Air Force Base.

In this position you will serve as a Historian and Archives Assistant  (NH-0301-02) researching, interpreting, editing, writing, collecting, accessioning, archiving, and preserving historical data. Projects will involve archiving, writing official history, oral history, heritage, heraldry, and more.

Typical 2026 salary range: $58,827 - $71,957 per year (includes Locality)

Temp/Term Statement:

This position is a temporary position not to exceed 30 Sep 2026.

Desired Skills:

Applicants should possess (or be working towards) an MA or PhD in history.

Desire a career working in official history at the state or federal level.

Possess a can-do spirit and an independent work ethic.

Major Duties:

Collect, organize, and accession files in accordance with USAF procedures at the direction of the AFTC archivist.

Research, write, and edit official history related to AFTC and the 412 Test Wing.

Conduct oral histories with Base/Center leadership.

Collaborate on a heritage project on the history of USAF Test.

Complete minor projects on military heraldry.

Assist in answering requests for information.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Depending on the type of position (competitive/excepted) you are selected for, you will be required to serve a 1-year probationary period OR 2-year trial period
  • Upon completion of your probationary/trial period, your employment will be terminated unless you receive certification, in writing, that your continued employment advances the public interest
  • Basic knowledge of historical principles, concepts, research sources, methodology, and techniques
  • General understanding of Air Force and major command history programs and current operations, policies, programs, and activities, especially as they apply to a typical military installation structure
  • Skill in fact-finding, problem analysis, problem resolutions, and development of concrete action plans to solve problems
  • Ability to collect, organize, critically evaluate, and interrelate large amounts of diversely formatted data drawn from a wide variety of sources and in preparing a narrative that presents a balanced and realistic picture of the subject
