About the Role:

The Air Force Test Center is looking for a Full-Time Lead Firefighter (GS-0081-08) to work at the 412th Test Wing, 412th Civil Engineer Group, 812th Civil Engineer Squadron, Fire and Emergency Services Flight (812 CES/CEFO) at Edwards Air Force Base.

 

In this position you will serve as a Lead Firefighter responsible for a major piece of firefighting equipment and its regularly assigned crew of three or more firefighters engaged in airfield and structural firefighting and rescue operations and the reduction and/or elimination of potential fire hazards.

Typical 2025 salary range: $88,485.70 - $115,069.22  Per Year (including locality pay)

Major Duties:

- Leads a crew of three or more fighters assigned to a firefighting vehicle engaged in aircraft, structural, EMS, hazmat, and technical rescue emergency responses.

- Directs firefighting crew in the operation of firefighting vehicles and equipment.

- Directs assigned crew in the performance of crash/rescue and firefighting duties at airfields handling complex aircraft; the performance of structural firefighting duties for a variety of facilities which may include research and/or large industrial complexes; and the performance of hazardous material containment and control and/or Basic Life Support duties.

- Leads assigned crew and performs emergency rescue of personnel and a variety of first aid measures to alleviate further injury and prepare the victim(s) for transport to a medical facility.

- Assigns crew members to perform maintenance of firefighting equipment and fire station facilities.

- Comply with health, safety, and environmental rules and procedures and performs work in a manner that enhances the safety of the work environment.

Qualifications/Requirements:

- Participate in a physical fitness program and complete an annual peer fitness assessment

- Work a 72-hours duty shift per week including weekends and holidays. May be subject to recall

- Work under adverse environmental conditions and falls under the respiratory protection program and hearing conservation program

- Drive a motor vehicle. An appropriate, valid driver’s license is required

- Ability to discern colors, contrast, and depth

- May be required to work the Fire Alarm and Communications Center

- Required to be certified by the Department of Defense Firefighter Certification System as Fire Officer I, Fire Instructor I, Fire Inspector I, HAZMAT Operations (Includes HAZMAT Awareness), and Airport Firefighter (includes Firefighter I & II)

- Maintain current National Registry Emergency Medical Technician-Basic (EMT-B) certification. The incumbent must possess NREMT certification within one year

- Must be certified by DoD Firefighter Certification System as a HAZMAT Technician and HAZMAT Incident Commander within one year

- This is a Mission-Essential position performing a Mission Critical Function which must continue uninterrupted after the occurrence of an emergency and continue through full resumption of all functions

- Knowledge of the operation of firefighting vehicles and associated equipment of significant complexity

- Knowledge of HAZMAT containment and control

- Thorough knowledge of the latest changes in aircraft cockpit design, ordinance placement, and cabin layouts to include the operation of hatch or canopy release mechanisms, ejection seat mechanisms, and/or oxygen supply

- Detailed knowledge of design, construction, utilization, and components of an aircraft
