Chickens first took flight at Arnold AFB 50 years ago

Bill Dillard, an outside machinist master, removes a shattered windshield in a mock C-130 Hercules cockpit tested at the Bird Impact Range at Arnold Air Force Base, Tennessee, in 1995. A chicken carcass fired at the range, most famously known as the “Chicken Gun” broke the windshield during simulated bird strike testing. The facility simulated in-flight bird strikes to aircraft canopies and other materials to aid manufacturers in the redesign and building of such components. The first shot from the Chicken Gun was fired 50 years ago. (U.S. Air Force photo)
