Chickens first took flight at Arnold AFB 50 years ago
Bill Dillard, an outside machinist master, removes a shattered windshield in a mock C-130 Hercules cockpit tested at the Bird Impact Range at Arnold Air Force Base, Tennessee, in 1995. A chicken carcass fired at the range, most famously known as the “Chicken Gun” broke the windshield during simulated bird strike testing. The facility simulated in-flight bird strikes to aircraft canopies and other materials to aid manufacturers in the redesign and building of such components.
