Chickens first took flight at Arnold AFB 50 years ago
A windshield that did not stand up to simulated bird strike testing at the Bird Impact Range at Arnold Air Force Base, Tennessee, is inspected by project engineers Jon Storslee, left, and Butch Garrett, center, and then-Air Force test director Tom Best in 1982. The range, more famously known as the “Chicken Gun,” was used to simulate in-flight bird strikes to aircraft canopies and other materials by launching chicken carcasses at test articles.
