October 5, 1956: Edwards Base Chapel Dedicated

The new Base Chapel was dedicated. The edifice subsequently became known as Chapel #1 or Memorial Chapel for its stained glass memorials to fallen comrades in flight.

The new Edwards Air Force Base chapel located at the corner of Rosamond Boulevard and Popson Avenue was opened on October 5. after a brief dedication ceremony.  Participating in the dedication ceremony were the 5th Air Force Band, Chaplain (Captain) Roy B. Johnston who delivered the invocation and Chaplain (Captain) Raphael R. Drone who lead the patriotic responsive reading  Also participating in the ceremony were Brig Gen J. S..Holtoner, Col Frank J. Collins, and Chaplain (Major) Lyman T. Barger.  Air Research and Development Command Staff Chaplain, Colonel George S. Wilson closed the ceremonies with a brief talk accepting the new chapel for
the Command.
