October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.  This year’s theme is “United to End Domestic Violence.”

“This month, we are reminded everyone deserves a safe relationship,” said Dr. Wendy Blevins, Eglin’s violence prevention integrator.

Blevins said preventing domestic violence is a shared responsibility that starts with support for victims.

She said everyone’s situation is different and it’s not their fault.  It can be difficult to know how to help a friend, co-worker or loved one who is in an abusive relationship.  She encouraged taking action.

“Start by asking ‘how can I support you?’” she said.  “Let them know you are there to listen.  Stay connected.  It’s important to remind victims that help is available.”
