About the Role:

The Air Force Test Center is looking for a Full-Time General Engineer with mechanical engineering experience to work at the 96 Test Wing System Safety Office (96 TW/SES) at Eglin Air Force Base, FL.

96TH TEST WING MISSION: We test and evaluate state-of-the-art weapon systems and cyber capabilities, provide quality installation and mission support, and serve as responsible stewards of our resources to deliver war-winning capabilities. The primary purpose or this position is to serve as a professional general engineer with mechanical engineering expertise responsible for system safety engineering for assigned programs/projects. Performs work to plan, analyze, and evaluate engineering and technical efforts used to define total weapons systems/subsystem requirements, translate requirements into design criteria, evaluate alternative design approaches, and develop system specifications in the area of Systems Safety Engineering to ensure safe weapons design and achieve design safety certification from the Air Force Non-Nuclear Munitions Safety Board (NNMSB).

Typical 2026 salary range: $89,508 - $138,370 Per Year (includes Locality)

Travel Requirements: TDY approximately 30 days per year

Desired Skills:

- 2 years experience as mechanical engineer with experience in finite element analysis, material science, guns, and ammunition

- 2 years experience working defense acquisition programs (desired, not required)

- Knowledge of standard system safety principles, analysis, and methods

- Demonstrated effectiveness working as part of cross-functional teams

Major Duties:

- Analyze conventional weapon system designs and qualification plans for non-conformance with military standards, and conduct hazard assessments to characterize associated risks of non-compliance

- Conduct deductive and inductive safety analyses, such as Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) and Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA).

- Provide expert system safety engineering support to multi-disciplinary teams, stakeholders, and joint-service review boards.

- Prepare and present oral and written reports, technical justifications, and recommendations on complex safety issues to diverse audiences, including executive leadership.

- Manage, plan, and prioritize system safety tasks across multiple projects, coordinating with other functional disciplines to ensure safety requirements are implemented.

- Serve in formal or informal leadership roles within cross-functional working groups to achieve outcomes beneficial to system safety within program constraints.

- Develop and maintain system safety artifacts, including analysis reports, progress updates, risk mitigation strategies, and formal briefings.

- Improve the methods, procedures, and policies of the System Safety office to increase performance, quality, and consistency.

- Assess system safety risks and develop mitigation strategies for new, modified, or acquired conventional weapon systems and components.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • U.S. Citizenship

  • Requires a bachelors degree in engineering from an accredited college or university.
  • Experience in mechanical engineering design and mechanical system analysis
  • Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and with technical accuracy (written and oral)
  • This is a designated Drug Testing Position
  • Obtain & maintain SECRET security clearance
  • Obtain & maintain Engineering & Technical Management Practitioner DAWIA Certification
