EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif -- The United States Army Air Forces and the Navy adopted the terms “knot” and “nautical mile” as standard aeronautical units of speed and distance, vice the statute of “miles per hour.”
The Civil Aeronautics Board was an agency of the federal government of the United States, formed in 1938 and abolished in 1985, that regulated aviation services including scheduled passenger airline service and provided air accident investigation. The agency based its headquarters in Washington, D.C.
By August 1946, the Aeronautical Board reported there were 2,592 Army-Navy aeronautical standards in use. This included 1,279 drawings, 788 Specifications and 188 bulletins.
