In this position you will serve as a squadron test pilot conducting experimental flight tests using C-12 and T-38 aircraft.

The 586 FLTS operates modified T-38C and C-12 aircraft which conduct experimental flight test activities for the Department of Defense. The squadron specializes in rapid prototyping and experimentation that have high impact at relatively low dollar cost. Operations are conducted primarily near Holloman AFB and the White Sands Missile Range region. A substantial portion of these activities include deployments throughout the CONUS including Alaska and other locations. Test operations depend on customer needs and the capabilities of our test aircraft. New configurations, envelop expansion, and operations with new technology are regular features of 586 FLTS operations.

The pilot can fly the T-38A/C and the C-12F/J—i.e. dual qual in both platforms dependent on the pilot’s history. The pilot, as a government civilian, acts as the squadron’s operations continuity to ensure sustained high quality operations through the ebb and flow of active-duty military members. The incumbent will be qualified in all mission elements which include chase/low-level/LASDT/FCF, and T-38 intercept/BFM/ACBT. Fighter/Fast-Jet Instructor experience is required. Test experience in developmental or operational test environments is desired. Being a graduate of a military test pilot school or weapons instructor course, is highly desired. The member must be able to hold a TS/SCI security clearance. Non-flying duties can include any of the normal operations functions such as Training, Stan-Eval, and Safety.

In the near (2-3 year) future the 586FLTS anticipates expanding its mission set to service the 704th Test Group’s Dynamic Radar Cross Section Measurement System (DRMS). The DRMS mission is forecast to support a variety of aircraft to include the F-35. This position will serve as an initial cadre for the 586 FLTS support to DRMS which may require an F-35 qualification. As such, fighter experience is highly desired and fighter-class aircraft RCS measurement flight test experience is desired. Triple qualification is not expected for this position. Pilot can expect to qualify in the T-38A/C and the C-12F/J, and eventually transition to a DRMS aircraft along with one of the aforementioned squadron-owned proficiency aircraft.
