The Air Force Flight Test Center (AFFTC) personnel supported Dusty Beard II, a short-suspense project initiated by Strategic Air Command (SAC) to test the feasibility of dispersing bomber and tanker aircraft on Western dry lakes. Tests were conducted on Mud Lake, Nevada, and Hidden Hills and Silver Lakes, California with B-47, B-52 and KC-135 aircraft. The tests proved inconclusive, and Headquarters SAC called upon the AFFTC to conduct scientific tests on dry lakes to determine accurate performance data for strategic aircraft.
